ASFA strengthens cyber security with new hireBY MATTHEW WAI | WEDNESDAY, 8 JUL 2026 11:39AMThe Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) has named its head of cyber and financial crime, bringing relevant experience from a super fund. Michael Collins has joined ASFA, stepping into the role with over 20 years of experience in cyber security and technology. In his new role, Collins will lead the sector's work on the Superannuation Cyber and Financial Crime Coordination Framework (SC3), and coordinate responses to cyber threats, scams and financial crimes. "This is an important and growing area of work for ASFA, supporting stronger protection for members and greater resilience across the superannuation sector," ASFA said. Collins was most notable for his tenure at HESTA, where he was the general manager information security for nearly a decade from 2012. More recently, he was the chief information security officer at Judo Bank between 2021 and 2024. He also has board oversight experiences, currently serving as the science board member at the Systems Thinking Standards Institute and was the independent director of Gateway Network Governance Body in Melbourne for close to three years. The appointment comes as ASFA continues to strengthen its cyber security framework for super trustees, launching two new tools in December 2025 to help them enhance their fraud controls. As cyber threats continue to increase, specifically around the financial services sector, experts have advised businesses to improve their security measures, not only to shield their digital infrastructure but to also to ensure their governance policies remain compliant.
