APS appoints new chief executive

Australian Philanthropic Services (APS) has appointed a new chief executive, with current chief Judith Fiander set to retire in February 2027 after leading the organisation through a period of growth in structured philanthropy.

Lisa George will succeed Fiander and commence with APS early next year, bringing extensive experience across financial services, philanthropy and purpose led organisations.

George has been with Macquarie Group since 2010 and is currently an executive director and global head of the Macquarie Group Foundation, which leads the firm's social impact activities. She is also a former co-chair and current board member of Philanthropy Australia and a director of For Purpose Investment Partners.

APS chair Jan Swinhoe said George's combination of commercial and philanthropic experience would support the organisation's next phase of growth.

"Lisa brings exceptional leadership experience across financial services, philanthropy and purpose-led organisations. She has a strong track record of leading growth, building high-performing teams and delivering meaningful outcomes for stakeholders", Swinhoe said.

The appointment comes as Australia experiences a significant intergenerational transfer of wealth, which APS said presents opportunities to grow philanthropy.

George said she was honoured to join APS at an important time for the sector.

"APS has built an outstanding reputation as a trusted partner for generous Australians, their advisers and the charitable sector. I look forward to building on that foundation and working with the team to expand APS's impact in the years ahead," George.

George joined the APS board as a non-executive director in July 2026, with Swinhoe previously describing her as one of Australia's respected leaders in philanthropy and social impact.

Swinhoe also thanked Fiander for her contributions to APS, saying she had led the organisation with "integrity, purpose and a deep commitment to helping Australians give more effectively".

During Fiander tenure, APS clients distributed a record $250 million to charities in FY26, while the organisation now supports more than 1200 clients who have committed more than $3.1 billion to the community.
