NZ Super chair's term extended by two years

John Williamson will continue to chair the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation for a further two years, following his appointment in March 2024.

His term will now conclude in October 2028.

Announcing the reappointment today, New Zealand Finance Minister Nicola Willis said the extension reflects Williamson's strong leadership and will maintain stability and continuity of the manager of the $93 billion super fund.

"It also maintains stability and continuity during the pre-election period and beyond, particularly as five of the seven board members are in their first term," Willis said.

"Williamson brings extensive experience in senior leadership, private equity, and governance, including eight years as managing director of former NZX-listed Hellaby Holdings. He has held diverse governance roles and legal expertise in competition and Māori resource law."

She added that the reappointment underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the Guardians will continue to deliver robust investment performance and fulfill mandate to grow New Zealand's sovereign wealth fund.

Under Williamson's guidance, the Guardians had implemented some significant changes, including the adoption of a revised strategic framework in April 2024.

Commenting, Williamson said he will continue to apply the right approach for its members.

"Our focus continues to be on ensuring we have the right structure and processes to achieve our purpose: Sustainable investment delivering strong returns for all New Zealanders," Williamson said.

"I'm pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to this important work."
