Market wrap - midday

The Australian share market remained lower at noon, but banking stocks were keeping it relatively sturdy after Wall Street fell more than one per cent last night and most commodity prices weakened. Local nickel stocks have been hit hard, as the base metal continued its rapid decline from record highs earlier this year. Nickel fell eight per cent last night alone.
