RETIREMENT INCOME INSIGHTS FOR FINANCIAL ADVISERS

Thursday, 24 October 2024 - Art Gallery of NSW | In person and live-streamed

Offering 4.5 CPD hours, subject to approval

It's no secret that Australia has an ageing population. Thousands of Aussies are retiring each week, and the conversation surrounding how to best support them is frequently making headlines.

The opportunity this presents for financial advisers is unmatched and, with the average retirement looking quite different these days, contemporary retirement advice is quickly becoming an art form.

Financial Standard's Best Practice Forum on Retirement Income will paint a clear picture of Australia's retirement landscape, exploring regulatory considerations, innovative product solutions, income strategies and leading insights from specialists in the space.

The Retirement Income Forum is a part of Financial Standard's annual Best Practice series for the financial advice community.

SMILE: techniques on tackling the top 5 retirement risks with confidence

A successful retirement requires solving each of the SMILE risks - Sequencing, Market, Inflation, Longevity and Emotional. Nobel laureate Jan Tilbergen found that you can't effectively solve multiple problems with a single solution, yet many retirees attempt to manage all the SMILE risks with investment strategy alone. To help advisers better assist their retired clients, this session will:

  • Provide an overview of the SMILE risks
  • Demonstrate the limitations and trade-offs required from common approaches
  • Detail how new IRIS legislation has increased the strategies available to manage SMILE risks
  • Explain how IRIS strategies can enhance investments solutions such as SMAs to improve retirement outcomes

Retirement renaissance: weighing up choices and trade-offs between capital access and lifetime income

  • A new set of design rules in 2019 broadened the range of new and innovative retirement income streams. These solutions can help manage the competing objectives of stable income, sequencing risk, longevity risk and flexibility. Lifetime income streams that satisfy a capital access schedule, whereby specific withdrawal and death benefits are imposed, may garner favourable assets test treatment for social security purposes - but at what cost, and is it really necessary?
  • In the pursuit of favourable social security treatment and a potential uplift in Age Pension, what are some of the considerations for capital access and income?
  • In this session, we use case study analysis to highlight some of the factors that advisers should consider when seeking clarity on whether to recommend a lifetime income stream that satisfies a capital access schedule, or one allowing full access to the investment value along the way.
