Nominees await top AFA honours

Standout financial advisers will be recognised with the presenting of the Association of Financial Advisers' annual suite of awards.

The Adviser of the Year, Rising Star of the Year, Female Excellence in Advice and the Excellence in Education award winners will be crowned at the conference's annual gala dinner.

AFA chief executive Philip Kewin said the nominees exemplify excellence in advice, diversity, innovation and education.

Kewin said of selecting the winners: "We are looking for people within our profession who will be the foundation block of the stronger, more rigorous profession that we are all committed to building."

The Adviser of the Year award is the AFA's most sought after honour. It recognises "extraordinary and visionary individual advisers" and finalists are judged on qualities of leadership, innovation, client-centricity and commitment to professional excellence.

Zurich chief distribution officer, life & investments, Kristine Brooks, said this year's finalists are "an exemplary illustration of advisers" who are flexible in the face of industry and regulatory changes, citing the significant changes the financial advice landscape has undergone.

"In today's landscape the ability to demonstrate the value that quality financial advice can play in shaping and protecting the lives of Australian families has never been more important," she said.

The nominees for the Excellence in Education award are judged on how they continually invest in their education and practically apply this when working with clients.

The AFA said the practical application of advisers' knowledge is a key factor, as it considers more than just the advisers' academic qualifications.

Kewin said consumer awareness, regulatory reform, and "the collective realisation of the growing importance of professional education" has prompted an increasing focus on adviser education in the past decade.

Women who are standouts in their community contributions have come out on top in the 2019 Female Excellence in Advice award finalists list.

"The aim of the award is two-fold. The first is to encourage more women to enter the industry and take on senior roles. The other equally important aim, is to encourage more women to seek advice so that they can be adequately resourced for retirement and obtaining insurance," Kewin said.

"With more women in the industry, we hope this will be a natural progression."
