Aware Super recruits Marsh McLennan risk specialist

Aware Super is bolstering its risk management and compliance team with a senior hire from Marsh McLennan, the global risk and insurance giant.

The $200 billion industry fund has appointed Norlena Brouwer as head of business risk and compliance for enablement, transformation and performance.

Aware Super has appointed Norlena Brouwer as head of business risk and compliance for enablement, transformation and performance, as the $200 billion industry fund strengthens its risk management strategies.

Brouwer joins from Marsh McLennan, where she served as chief risk and compliance officer for the Pacific region.

Her appointment comes as Australian superannuation funds face heightened regulatory scrutiny and increasing pressure to demonstrate robust governance frameworks.

In her new position, Brouwer will oversee Line 1 risk across the fund's enablement, transformation and performance teams, ensuring compliance with legislation, regulations and internal policies.

"The role is responsible for fostering a proactive risk culture and driving accountability for the identification and mitigation of risks and the rectification of issues," Aware Super said.

Her career spans two decades in financial services, including eight years as group executive of risk and compliance at Hostplus before joining Marsh McLennan in early 2023.

She departed the group in September 2024, having previously worked at BankWest and the Property Council of Australia.

Separately, Mercer Superannuation  - which is part of the group - last month confirmed the appointment of Dennis Gentilin - an ex-banker turned whistleblower - as chief risk officer.

Gentilin previously served as UniSuper's head of enterprise risk.
