Rising star scores major absolute return mandate

An asset manager established in 2016 by Credit Suisse veterans has won an absolute return mandate shortly after receiving a superior rating from SQM Research.

Dalton Street Capital, led by co-founders Alan Sheen and Nick Selvaratnam, will manage an absolute return strategy for Infocus subsidiary Alpha Fund Managers. Sheen and Selvaratnam were previously head of proprietary trading and head of equities respectively at Credit Suisse; their fund combines a long-only equities strategy with quant-based short-term futures trading.

Selvaratnam said the fund is designed to deliver absolute returns in all market cycles, giving clients "the best of both worlds: protection in volatile markets and equity returns as markets improve."

Alpha Fund Managers head of funds management William Wang said Dalton Street's strategy "appealed to us given its approach in capturing alpha from market behavioral dynamics which is a fairly unique offering in the market."

As above, Dalton Street's fund, which has delivered 22% over the year to date, was recently rated positively by SQM and has been included on platforms including netwealth, HUB24 and Powerwrap. Sheen said this reflected the demand for liquid, daily priced alternative strategies "as investors are seeking to manage downside risk."

Dalton Street operates as part of Prodigy Investment Partners' multi-boutique suite.
