IMCA- Communication and Competence: How ordinary people understand investment ri
Starts: 20 February 2012 12:00pm
Ends: 20 February 2012 2:00pm

When it comes to explaining investment risk to superannuation fund members, 'How you tell them' is more important than 'what you tell them'. The University of Technology, Sydney recently surveyed 1200 superannuation fund members to find out how they understand investment risk as it is often described in disclosure statements. The results indicated that switching between different risk formats changes investment decisions markedly. Further, people with high levels of financial competence are still vulnerable to these presentation effects. The study found that particular styles of presentation result in more confusion than others. Policy-makers and industry need to coordinate over financial product disclosures and initiatives for improving financial competence.
